Geekness time.

The Cruciatus curse didnt work because in book 4 and 5 Harry was made to learn to shake it off.  With enough focus and will power a good wizard can make it less painful and or throw it off entirely.  It was part of the lessons when the fake Mad Eye Moody was teaching them Defence Against the Dark Arts.
