MemberOK, I just made some basic error pages.? I checked my stats and saw that the most frequent errors were 404 and 401;? I made 401, 403, and 404 just to be safe.? I uploaded the lot and entered the following in my .htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 401 http://www.chateau-cherie.com/free-bbw-porn/error401.html
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.chateau-cherie.com/free-bbw-porn/error403.html
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.chateau-cherie.com/free-bbw-porn/error404.htmlNow my 404 page seems to work fine (try http://www.chateau-cherie.com/blablabla.html), but I continue to get the default 401 error page.? Can anybody tell me what’s going on here?
TIA!

KeymasterCherie,
A HTTP Error 401 – Means “Unauthorized” That is, the user/browser doesn’t have the correct permissions or isn’t logged in to view the page.
Generally this error message means you need to log on (enter a valid user ID and password) somewhere first. If you have just entered these and then immediately see a 401 error, it means that one or both of your user ID and password were invalid for whatever reason (entered incorrectly, user ID suspended etc.).
This can also be caused by screwing up something in your .htaccess files. If you have cPanel, you can add custom error pages without ever having to mess with your .htaccess. If you restore your .htaccess, does the problem go away?

MemberPK,
What I am trying to do is make error pages customized to my site that show up instead of the generic white ones when a user at my site gets a 401 (or 403 or 404) error.? My pages are there, and I entered the code above in the .htacces file in my public html directory, and the 404 error page works fine but the 401 one doesn’t.? I’ve tried adding the code to the .htaccess for the protected directory and putting copies of the error pages there as well, but that didn’t seem to do anything.? ?

KeymasterDoes your hosting account have cPanel? If so, go to cPanel, click “custom error pages”, and add your 401 page there. If you don’t have cPanel  I’d ask your webhost for assistance if you haven’t already. They should be able to check it out for you, and see what the problem might be.
